When talking about carpfishing in quarries people usually refers to carpfishing in ancient excavation areas and gravel extraction, which have been transformed into artificial lakes when the aquifer has been brought to light by flooding the area.
These artificial lakes have been populated with various types of fish and over the time they have achieved a good environmental balance becoming proper self-sufficient ecosystems so as to increase and increase the fish in it both in size and in number.
For this reason the oldest quarries are one of the most interesting places for carp fishing anglers as they offer the possibility of meeting both with many medium-sized fish and some large ancient specimens.
The quarries therefore play a role of great importance for fans of this fishing technique so much that nowadays many of them are dedicated by managers exclusively to carp fishing.
Test the Bottom
Scouting and plumbing are the most important factors for the success of a fishing session in this type of water. It is absolutely necessary to identify those areas where fish love to stop and eat.
The searching can be partially performed simply on sight (using a pair of glasses equipped with polarizing lenses) looking for reeds, fronds of trees that float into the water, fallen or submerged trees, artifacts, etc.
For a complete "mapping" of the environment it is better to use the echo sounder or simply with the plumbing method. The carp are stationed at almost any depth, but we are more interested in the supply areas.
In order to increase our chances, we will try to identify all the "steps", that means the variations of more or less depth that often characterize the banks and the bottom of the quarries, or look for the shoals and gullies, making the appropriate distinctions on where to fish, also according to the season that we are facing and that often determines the external temperature and water, and the degree of sun exposure of the surface of the lake.
So we will have to look for whatever situation that goes to break the monotony of the bottom and which can arouse interest in the fish paying attention to changes in consistency of the backdrop (soft / hard, mud / gravel ...) that often represent favorite areas for carp, especially if the seabed is flat and uniform.
Equipment
The equipment will be specific and responsive to the most varied demanding with which the anglers can come into contact. To fish in the quarry we will use
Carpfishing Rods with an action between 2.75 and 3 pounds. The versatility of this choice will allow us not only to make long shots and to force the fish away from obstacles, but also to fish without problems under shore.
The reels must be sturdy, and the most suitable ones are those specially designed for carp fishing, which we are going to line up with a 0.35 nylon or a braid of, at least, 30 pounds especially if there is a strong presence of algae. Ballasts from about 100 grams will allow us to fish well everywhere.
As for the hooklink, it’s better to choose what normally gives us more confidence for both pop-up and sinking presentations, always remembering the distrust of the fish in this type of environments: discreet terminals with small hooks and made with camouflage or transparent materials are always to be preferred.
Baits and rigs
Many quarries, especially the most famous and rich in fish ones, have a constant presence of carp anglers on their banks, with all this strong fishing pressure carp and amur will be very suspicious and attentive to detail.
Often to succeed, you have to make radical choices and in contrast with other anglers; If, for example, everyone uses big baits and feeds a lot even on a wide range, we will have to change strategy and bake near the primer with stringer or pva bags.Never ever forget the grains, corn on all, since often these environments are also populated by amur.
Fishing action
It is better to be as discreet as possible during the fishing trip, limiting noise and vibrations to a minimum and above all try to differentiate the approach on each rod so as to have more possibilities of capture .
In a large quarry it is absolutely essential to have an excellent knowledge of the shape of the bottom in all sectors.
A stringer with some balls and other 10 boilies thrown with cobra or catapult near the trigger will be more than enough.
A mixture of corn, boilies and corn flakes moistened with the water to soak the grain will be irresistible for carp and amur. Small hook, fluorocarbon terminal and some corn grain interspersed with pieces of floating foam to lighten the rig: a lethal weapon in all the quarries.
