Lake Trout Fishing in Winter

Winter In Lake 1

In winter fish are usually slow and lazy. Everything seems to stop or slow down. Including fishes. This also applies to the small artificial lakes. Small lakes are now a growing business, in fact anglers love to fish here and in winter they are most of the time sold-out. In winter you’ll find here every kind of angler, especially match anglers.

Fishing in small reservoirs has changed a lot in the past years and nowadays it is mostly characterized by continued movements of the bait and angler’s displacements to find the exact place where the fish is.

It is not a stationary fishing, but it is made of many accessories and rods with a different casting action depending on the situations.

Technique

In winter the most used system is the lead with quite a heavy ballast of about 0.16. In winter fishes love to stay under the bank or close to it. You don’t need to cast too far away, so you can choose a short lead between 1 and 4 g.

For the terminal lines we have to consider that those fishes have got teeth that can ruin the nylon over the hook. In fact the most sensitive part of the final line is 3-4 cm over the hook where the trout bite after they have eaten the bait. That’s why it is better to use abrasion resistant lines or fluorocarbon lines.

Piombino tremarella Rods

In order to start this kind of fishing you have to have a dedicated rod with the following characteristics. It has to be light, easy to handle and soft. It can happen that fishes are too lazy, then to stimulate them you may need to choose thin hooks and appropriate baits. The light or ultra-light rod must be at least 3.90m long and suitable for 6 gr ballasts. The tip must be very sensitive.

The best tremarella rods has got a carbon tip to get a better sensitivity. In the last years the separated sections rods became more and more popular in trout lake fishing. In-line guides, light, sensitive and easy to handle, those rods are the best tools for this technique. Of course their price is higher than a simple telescopic rod.

For the beginners a series of 4 telescopic rods is perfect, to fish with small leads or bombardas. The separated sections rods are very technical rods, mostly used during the competitions.

Baits and Rigs

In lake fishing the best baits are the wax worms and the white superworms. These last are incredibly spinning and attractive for trout. For leisure fishing you can also use silicon baits and flavored moldable dough. There are some days when it extremely easy to fish in lake but sometimes it is not that fun because fishes are lazy and not curious. In this case you can use different and colored presentations, like a couple made with wax-worm and silicon bait or some dough with a wax worm or a piece of super worm etc..

What about if you see bubbles?

Sometimes in warmer days, even in winter, it can happen to see some bubbles, that means that trout are on the surface. In this case you have to change your ballast and make it move right under the first layers of the water.
